Day 1

  • Morning — Hotel Breakfast & Departure

    Breakfast at 08:00 at the hotel. Depart for the tour at 08:30–09:00. Your guide-driver will pick you up at your hotel or the Aktau airport before heading east into the steppe.

  • Torysh Valley — Stone Spheres

    Explore one of Mangystau's most enigmatic sites. Hundreds of perfectly round boulders, some as tall as a person, are scattered across the steppe — remnants of ancient seabed formations millions of years old.

  • Kokala — Light Snack Lunch

    Stop at the Kokala tract for a light snack lunch amid the dramatic desert scenery before continuing south.

  • Sherkala Mountain

    Marvel at Sherkala — the iconic "lion mountain" rising alone from the flat steppe. Scramble up the lower slopes for sweeping views of the colourful canyon landscape stretching to the horizon.

  • Evening — Overnight at Airakty

  • Morning — Sunrise at Airakty

    Wake up early to catch the golden morning light flooding the limestone towers of the Valley of Castles. A short walk among the spires before breakfast makes for an unforgettable start to the day.

  • Tuzbair — Salt Plateau & Light Snack

    Drive south-east to Tuzbair, a vast salt-and-chalk plateau where the earth takes on shades of white and pale yellow. Stop here for a light snack lunch while taking in the otherworldly flatness stretching to the horizon.

  • Afternoon — Off-Road Track to Kogez

    The longest off-road stretch of the tour (91 km of dirt roads) winds through remote canyon country. Watch the landscape shift from chalk plateaux to ochre badlands as you approach the Kogez valley.

  • Evening — Dinner & Night at Kogez Yurt Camp

    Settle into the traditional Kazakh yurt camp "Kogez." Enjoy a hearty dinner prepared in the camp kitchen and spend the night in a warm, beautifully decorated yurt — a true highlight of the journey.

    Visit the remarkable underground mosque of Karaman Ata — a medieval Sufi hermitage carved directly into the rock face. The site is a place of pilgrimage and carries centuries of spiritual significance.

  • Ybykty Say Canyon

    Explore the dramatic gorge of Ybykty Say, where layered rock walls drop sharply into a narrow canyon floor. Perfect for photography and a short hike through the winding ravine.

  • Lunch — Zhanaozen Café

    Leave Kyzylkup and head for Bozzhyra — the crown jewel of Mangystau. Only 24 km of asphalt before transitioning to dramatic off-road tracks that wind through the plateau.

  • Panorama 1 — Martian Viewpoint

    Stand at the edge of the Bozzhyra canyon — a landscape so alien it looks straight out of science fiction. The vast amphitheatre of pale rock spires and chalk cliffs will take your breath away.

  • Panorama 2 — Dragon's Crest Ridge

    Walk the razor-sharp Dragon's Crest — a narrow fin of rock with vertiginous drops on both sides. The view from its spine stretches for dozens of kilometres in every direction.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time for this tour is from April to October. Spring offers wildflowers and mild temperatures, while autumn provides warm golden light on the rock formations.

Fitness Level

This tour involves moderate walking and some climbs to viewpoints. No technical skills are required, but a reasonable fitness level is recommended for the panorama hikes.
